ins mara bush-camp noch heuer, 2010 ?

nachdem ende oktober eine woche schulfrei ist, meine liebe frau arbeiten muss, eine marokko-reise mit kollegInnen nicht zustandekommt, schau ich mich nach einer alternative um - eigentlich jene, die ich vor der ins wasser gefallenen, bzw. auf sand gebauten ;-) marokko-reise schon geplant hatte:

diesmal aber nicht in lodges, sondern mitten im geschehen: ich hab einmal im auge, eine woche im mara-zelt-lager , offiziell mara bush camp - wie die bilder zeigen, von einem bush-zeltlager weit entfernt - zu verbringen.

"Nairobi - 05 March 2010 - Following the flash flooding that occurred on 4th March 2010 in Samburu National Park and Buffalo Springs National Reserve most of the lodges and camps in the area, including Samburu Serena Safari Lodge, suffered significant damage. Serena staff at the lodge and our Operations and Management team from Nairobi responded swiftly to assist all guests to move to safer areas and to then be evacuated out of the Samburu area and to their onward destinations. Despite the physical damage to the lodge, we can gladly report that there were no injuries or casualties amongst either guests or staff, and that everybody was evacuated out of the Samburu area, without incident.

Samburu Serena Safari Lodge is currently closed as we review the situation and assess the full extent of the damage. We shall provide further updates on the status of the lodge and our forward plans as we get a more concrete assessment of the situation.

We must extend our thanks and appreciation to all our staff at Samburu Serena for their courage and dedication in handling this crisis situation and ensuring the safety of all our guests and their colleagues.

samburu lodge - zerstört durch flut !

und das sah so idyllisch aus [clip] , als wir dort waren - und heute steht das wasser bis an die decke [clip] und die lodges am fluss sind zerstört.....


"The torrential rains presently sweeping the East African region have now found another ‘outlet’ to cause disaster. The Ewaso Nyiro river, which traverses the Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba parks burst its banks and rose to what has been described as ‘unprecedented levels’ in a tsunami like wave of water. Safari lodges and safari camps like Samburu Serena Lodge, Samburu Lodge, Intrepids Camp and Larson’s Camp got flooded.

The elephant research centre and an affiliated smaller camp were ‘under water' too, but at the onset of the fast rise of the river, staff in all locations alerted guests, evacuated them to higher grounds and rescued whatever could be carried away of the equipment, files and valuables from the affected properties.

However, with tents, rooms, restaurants, shops and public areas submerged, enormous damage has been done to the owners and management companies. The cost of replacements and rebuilding is estimated to run into millions of USD.

Some tourists, it was learned, were subsequently airlifted back to Nairobi to continue with their holiday in other parts of Kenya.

Kenya’s tourism crisis center immediately swung into action, coordinating the evacuation of tourists from the affected parks with the local and national authorities. The government also deployed rescue personnel immediately after the extent of the disaster became known.

According to a source in Nairobi the river bridges were badly damaged as debris, including huge trees, were swept up to the bridge pillars. It remains to be seen if safe crossing can be assured once the water subsides or whether repairs need to be carried out first.

This correspondent recalls similar circumstances in the late 1980’s, when the Samburu Serena Lodge was under water and the relatively new Larson’s Camp was completely swept away. Then, just as now, the deforestation in and around the Aberdare Mountains was blamed for the flash floods, following torrential rains in the main water catchment areas, where the soil was unable to absorb the massive quantities of rain, leading eventually to the type of flash flooding now seen again.

However, during the dry spells the Ewaso Nyiro river often almost dries up, showing clearly the affect deforestation and encroachment of forests has, in Kenya and of course the entire region and that governments must act now to stem this trend.

This correspondent expresses his relief that no one came to harm and naturally regrets the loss of property and damage to those safari lodges and camps."

lange kein regen - und dann massive überflutungen

"Massive Flood Devastates Samburu

Samburu has been hit by a massive flood [pics] which has destroyed six lodges and the Save The Elephants research camp. The wreckage is unbelievable. There have been no reports of casualties and the Ewaso Lions team is ok.

Around 5am this morning, a giant flashflood came down the Ewaso Nyiro river, washing away lodges and camps. Our friends at Elephant Watch and Save The Elephants managed to reach high ground, but the camps were wiped out.

Elsewhere, people were on treetops and roofs waiting for help. The British Army, Tropic Air, and others spent the day evacuating people out of the area.

Our camp is far enough from the river so that it survived. Several people from the reserve, who have nowhere else to go, have come to our camp for the night. I don’t know what will happen next.

What’s especially frightening is that a lot more rain is expected.

manche safaris: gefährlich bis lebensgefährlich

wir hatten in den lodges vereinzelt auch das angebot, fußwanderungen, mit führer, durch die wildnis zu machen. wir haben das immer abgelehnt, da uns zu gefährlich. auch unser führer von sunworld-safaris hatte eine eher negative einstellung zu diesen unternehmungen, da auch für ihn gefährlich. man ist ja nicht wirklich im zoo, sondern mitten in der wildnis, leben pur.

"Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- An American tourist and her one-year- old daughter were trampled to death by an elephant in Kenya while they were walking near a lodge in a wildlife reserve in the center of the East African country, a park official said.

The woman and her baby were being accompanied by a tour guide, her husband and other tourists when the elephant attacked them about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from Castle Lodge in Mount Kenya National Park, Senior Warden Godfrey Wakaba said by phone today. The incident took place on Jan. 4, he said.

“The tourists left the lodge for a casual walk when the incident happened,” Wakaba said.The victims’ bodies have been flown to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, he said, without providing further information. There was a similar accident in the area last year, Wakaba said."

wir haben vereinzelt derartige kleingruppen auch gesehen, meilenweit entfernt von lodge und hilfe, unverständlich, wie man sich in diese gefahr begeben kann - und aus dem jeep darf man während der game-drives gar nicht aussteigen, und dann wandern die als mega kick sozusagen zu fuß durch das richtige afrikanische leben.......

mein eintrag im gästebuch des veranstalters sunworld-safari, da auch niederlassungen in den USA und GB, in englischer sprache abgefasst - in kürze:


eine safari sollten sie sich nicht entgehen lassen !



"Just came back from a 10-days’ safari trip with the Nowak’s Sunworldsafari ex Nairobi (Aug. 7, 2009 to Aug. 17, 2009). We (daughter (26 yrs) and me, my wife not too enthusiastic about ‘authentic’ places ;-) had started planning a safari trip already in September 2008.
When then doing research on the internet among others I stumbled across the Nowak’s Sunworldsafari and was not only impressed by the detailed homepage, but also by the many positive comments. But you know, who would publish negative ones, I thought. So I first got in contact with Sunworldsafari and Mr. Nowak in Vienna responded within 30 minutes – but I would also have accepted a reaction an hour later ;-)
From the first moment on I had the impression that Mr. Nowak not wants to make money by selling me a safari under any circumstances - who, however, wouldn’t want to make money - but, above all, patiently tailor a safari to our very needs and requests.
Our main requests were: individual safari (two people), no tents, good lodges, flight to first and flight from last lodge from/to Nairobi – it’s worth the extra money !!!.
After quite some exchange of emails with a very patient and helpful Mr. Nowak we had a programme that for me at that time looked pretty good – and turned out to be excellent: as a start 3 nights at Samburu Serena Lodge, 2 nights at the Ol Pajeta Ranch House / Sweetwaters, 2 nights at Lake Nakuru Lodge, and finally 3 nights at Mara Serena Lodge, all full-board, with the best available rooms (see also comments on tripadvisor.com).

Lodges: perfect choices, enjoyed the stays; all within the parks, no time and energy (bad roads) lost driving to and from the parks for game-drives.

Transport: jeep (4x4) is a perfect choice, you get anywhere, at any weather you want, even off the main roads in the parks; when it rains roads are quite tricky. after rainfalls mini-busses have trouble staying on the slippery roads, saw various being stuck in the mud; try not to pack too many people in one jeep; a 4x4 jeep is a perfect choice. Mini-busses also have a quite restricted space for passengers, which might be quite tiring on longer drives, and the space when the roof-top is open is quite limited in mini-busses. However, the more people there are on a bus/jeep, the less expensive a tour might get. But from experience we recommend a very small group – then safari drives are more fun, and there are no quarrels about the best photo-positions; remember, the best action on the bus is always blocked by other tourists, when on the smaller, packed mini-busses ;-)
And as you probably don’t do a safari every year make it a perfect one that you enjoy.

Tourguide/driver; we had John (call sign “charlyboy”), felt being well taken care of, always felt safe; tried to find the not so numerously available cheetahs or leopards, did use his mobile phone, the CB radio, did driving AND explaining and guiding at the same time – quite astonishing; we saw the big five, two river crossings (not the spectacular ones seen on TV ;-) which are probably few and far between), lions hiding behind our jeep to approach and then chase a group of zebras, lions crossing the Mara river (a very rare sighting), a cheetah trying to kill an antelope, and many more things, e.g. a gnu crossing the Mara river being chased by crocodiles. When it was safe on the other side there were loud yells of excitement and joy from the numerous tourists at the crossing point.

Safaris: important: only in a zoo you can see the animals you want to see at any time, any time you visit the zoo – safaris require patience, don’t put pressure on your guide, he’s doing his best, most of the times you’ll be successful, if not, don’t be disappointed; just relax and let him do his job – then your safari will be a successful one, even without having seen all 5 of the ‘big five’ group.
By the way, with an individual safari you can do as many safari-drives a day as you want, and stop at any point as long as you want or just drive on. However, best times are mornings before 9, and afternoons after 4.30, else the heat is on, all the animals just hang around, don’t move, and you probably feel hot as well; spend that time at the pool, in the shade and enjoy that time of your safari, as well.
Obvious, but just want to say that: there is lots of dust all days long, be prepared, you can’t escape it, neither can your camera equipment ! roads are sometimes very bad, even mainroads ! so contact your orthopedist, plastic surgeon, and, if already necessary, dentist, before booking ;-)

Malaria: took Malarone, luckily no side-effects; didn ‘t see any mossis, however; but Malarone or the like is probably a good decision – ask your doc.

Summary: Sunworldsafari and the Nowaks are a guarantee for a great safari, you tell them what you want, and they target the safari to your needs, or you simply book a tour offered on their homepage. Mrs. Nowak in the Nairobi office contacted my twice on the safari to find out if everything was ok.
Thank you to the Vienna and Nairobi Nowaks (by the way both Nowaks’ mother tongue is German; but they do speak perfect English as well).
PS: Masai Mara, we think, should be done last, kind of climax !

PSSS: buy a mobile-phone SIM-card in Kenya, and use it in your phone – a call to Europe is about 45 cents / minute, I guess, a bargain, and there are no roaming fees ! If you need the internet very badly there’s a USB stick for mobile internet, we’ve been told, about USD 50 , no download limit, works wherever you have a telephone signal .

abschlussbericht - der blick zurück

kommt erst etwas später. meine sehr persönlichen, ganz aktuellen, am tag des erlebens geschriebenen kommentare sind schon online.
ich werde jetzt einmal die eindrücke der safari auf mich einwirken lassen, und dann eine abschließende zusammenfassung geben.
eines kann jetzt schon gesagt werden, empfehlenswert !

für quereinsteiger im blog:
da die berichte zwischen malarone einnehmen, wegen malaria, frühstück nach 0630 morgen-safari, pool-liegen, mittagessen, pool-liegen, 1600-uhr-safari und abendausklang geschrieben wurden, bitte um nachsicht, so fehler vorhanden.
ich war zum zeitpunkt des abfassens nicht betrunken und trotz malarone im vollbesitz meiner geistigen kräfte.

lie-flat - und trotzdem ein knick, druckstellen vermeiden angesagt

wir hatten diesmal nicht 1a und 1c so wie beim flug von amsterdam nach nairobi in der MD11 [seatguru], sondern 2a und 2c [seatguru] , die sitze waren zwar verglichen mit denen in der md11, etwas modernere lie-flat, aber doch nicht flach, so max. 160 grad, mit 2 knickstellen. schlafen ist für paxe, wie ich, die nur seitlich oder am bauch liegend schlafen können, ein horror. man dreht und wendet sich ständig, um die optimale position zu liegen - meist druckt es irgendwo ganz mächtig; [anflug auf AMS gegen 0645 in der früh, anflug vom norden her]mit der zeit döst man dann dahin, schlafen glaub ich kann man das nicht nennen, wird dann kurz wieder wach, rutscht wieder herum, weil man richtung fußende auf der schiefen ebene hinuntergerutscht ist, und döst weiter. trotzdem besser als in der economy auf 3-4-3-reihigen sitzen eingeklemmt zu sitzen.
auch ist die lounge bei längeren wartezeiten, so wie jetzt in AMS, 4.5 stunden, ganz nett.

warum kenia indien ist (180809)

Was chaos-flughäfen anbelangt, haben wir ja schon erfahrung – new delhi international, bericht hier.
Wie bereits berichtet, die businesschlange war kurz, die economy paxe standen stundenlang, um einzuchecken. Es gab paxe die brauchten vom anstellen vor betreten des terminals bis zum flieger 4,5 stunden !!!!
organisation ist dort ein großes problem, nicht nur weil streik war, und die b747 der klm am vortag wegen klappendefekt wieder umkehren musste, und alle paxe 24 stunden in nairobi gestrandet waren, somit 2 klm flüge am abend abgewickelt werden mussten, b747, und b777-200. aber das war ja bekannt, da kann man sich drauf einstellen.
übrigens die hotelpreise in nairobi haben sich um den wert 2,5 vermehrt - weil durch den streik der kenia airways viele paxe in nairobi übernachten mussten, bzw. hängengeblieben sind.
das problem, man fragt 3 verschiedene mitarbeiter dort, und bekommt unterschiedliche antworten, das kümmert niemand, man schert sich nicht darum. abflug wäre kurz nach 2200 uhr gewesen, um 2230 hatten es noch immer nicht alle paxe trotz stundenlanger anstellerei zum flieger geschafft. dann waren endlich alle paxe drinnen, und die türen zu, und dann wurden noch mehrere container mit gepäck (!!!!!) gebracht, in summe damit 2 stunden verspätung - nicht im einflussbereich der KLM.
unseren weiterflug nach wien haben wir versäumt, sind um 0700 uhr gelandet, abflug VIE um 0710, waren aber schon auf den mittagsflug der KLM umgebucht. damit ankunft in wien gegen 1420.
die gute sache für kenia: die touristen vergessen bald wieder die geschichten über die chaotischen zustände, und fliegen weiter hin. zur erinnerung, als es vor monaten politische unruhen in thailand gab, wurde der flughafen tagelang von protesierenden thailändern blockiert, und ALLE fluglinien mussten paxe dortlassen, bzw. konnten bangkok nicht anfliegen - vergessen, der tourismus geht weiter, auch wir sind weihnachten dort - dazu gibts auch schon einen blog - man hofft, dass es einen selbst nicht betrifft, aber die die einen oder mehrere tage am flughafen in nairobi gestrandet waren, ohne hilfe und info, für die war's sehr stressig.

Ok, in der aufregung vergessen, der flug aus der lodge nach nairobi/wilson (170809)

Der turbinen-flieger war pünktlich um 1600 uhr in der luft, mit an bord 9 paxe, die schon von einer anderen lodge kamen, das wetter ganz gut, kein gewitter so wie die tage zuvor, dafür aber im flieger 28 grad, schwül wie am boden ! zuvor musste unser fahrer, der uns zur piste gebracht hat, noch die elefanten, gnus und anderes getier vertreiben.
nach 45 minuten flugzeit und einem vollkreis 500 ft über den häusern, wegen eines anderen fliegers im anflug, landung ohne probleme. Handgepäck ausgeladen und wir wurden abgeholt, zu unserer überraschung von john ‚charlieboy’, wie er sich am funk nennt, unseren fahrer, und nach einem kurzen stau raschest zum flugplatz gebracht, wo uns…… (siehe vorherigen beitrag)

Business – oder vor dem flughafen vor einen bus werfen - schmieren geht auch(170809)

Kenia hat sich mit dem streik keinen guten dienst erwiesen, zumindest bis die leute das wieder vergessen haben. Wie schon berichtet heute ist der erste tag nach 3 tagen streiks der kenia airways. Da die auch mit der KLM in einer allianz sind, sind viele paxe, die KLM gebucht haben, in flieger gewesen, so wie wir beim herflug, mit OPERATED by KENIA AIRWAYS – und die sind seit 3 tagen hängengeblieben, so sie nicht umgebucht werden konnten. Es gibt paxe die haben sich 7 stunden angestellt, haben dann endlich ein ticket bekommen, und es war dasselbe, das sie schon hatten, für einen flug der nicht durchgeführt wurde.
Man muss sich vor dem eingang in das gebäude in einer langen schlange anstellen, security check fürs gepäck.
Mit etwas dollarscheinen in der hand ließ es sich rasch an der schlange vorbeigehen. Endlich drinnen, hunderte von leuten die sich kreuz und quer durch die eingangshalle beim checkin-counter für kenia airways und klm anstellten – wartezeit sicher stunden.
Wir sind froh dass wir das abschlussessen, vom veranstalter angeboten, und tradition, sausen ließen, hätten wir aber auch ohne den vorangegangenen streik gemacht.
Die businessclass-schlange war kurz nur 5 paxe vor uns, einchecken ging, trotz der tatsache, dass zig angestellte herumliefen, und plätze tauschten, verhältnismäßig rasch. Dann noch ein ausreiseformular ausgefüllt, war eigentlich ein einreiseformulare, von deren sorte wir bei der einreise bereits 4 per person ausgefüllt hatten, wieder durch passkontrolle, ohne schlange, den wegweisern in die KLM lounge gefolgt, wo man uns mitteilte, die ist schon lange wo anders, aber die schilder hat man noch nicht geändert ;-) – und das nachdem wir uns wieder bei einem schalter mit ‚registrieren’ (für die lounge (?)) angestellt hatten ;-(
Jetzt sitzen wir in der simba-lounge, der löwe hat allerdings mehr fläche zum bewegen, als die businessclass paxe von kenia airways und klm, und genießen das knappe speisen- und getränkeangebot, und das internet – jetzt kann man nur noch hoffen, dass der flieger nicht eingeht. Der flug wird heute sogar mit 2 fliegern durchgeführt, um einen teil der gestrandeten kenia airways und klm leute wieder nach amsterdam zu bringen.
Dank der telefonischen hilfe von fr. nowak und sunworldsafari, sie hat uns am flughafen nochmals kontaktiert, um zu hören, dass alles ok ist; somit hatten wir vom vormittag an auch den ganzen tag ein besseres gefühl, dass es mit dem flug in jedem fall klappt.


PS: auch in europa wird gestreikt: LTU piloten streiken 3 tage lang [august 2009] , viele flüge betroffen - nicht nur ein afrikanisches problem ;-)
nur der umgang mit der minimierung der auswirkungen auf die paxe ist bei uns etwas besser.
